Seasons:
Get ready for me to sound like a guide: the fishing can be good in any season, but there are certain times when we don’t fish for musky, and certain times when it is better than average. Even in those better than average times, they’re still musky, so showing up with the right attitude and a willingness to put the work in will increase your odds of seeing fish. The only time we don’t fish for muskies is when the water temperatures are dangerously high, which is rare in the upper reaches of the french broad, where water temperatures tend to peak in the mid to low 70’s, during very hot weeks in mid to late summer, and in particular when the nights don’t get below mid 70s. Many nights in the upper end of the river dip into the 50s, even in mid summer, as the river sits at 2,200’.
